Russian forces have occupied the villages of Memryk and Kalynove in Ukraine's Donetsk Oblast, DeepState monitoring group analysts reported on Telegram on Aug. 28.

Russian troops have also advanced near Novohrodivka, Kostiantynivka, and around Mykhailivka, Lisivka, and Vodiane, according to the same sources.

Previously, DeepState reported that Russian troops were attacking Ukrainian defense positions in Vuhledar from the flanks.

"In recent days, the enemy has intensified actions in two areas—west of Pavlivka and near Vodiane," the analysts concluded.

“The aim is clear: to encircle Vuhledar because there have been hundreds of unsuccessful frontal assaults.”

Situation in Donetsk Oblast

The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War reported on July 30 that Russian troops were making significant tactical advances toward Pokrovsk.

DeepState reported battles near the outskirts of Toretsk on July 31. Also in July, Ukrainian Defense Forces withdrew from the Kanal district in Chasiv Yar.

DeepState analysts reported on Aug. 13 that Russian forces had captured the villages of Lysychne, Ivanivka, and Svyrydonivka in Donetsk Oblast.

Volodymyr Zamotaiev, head of the Pokrovsk District State Administration, stated on Aug. 16 that Russian troops were 10.5 kilometers from Pokrovsk.

The Donetsk regional administration announced the mandatory evacuation of children from the Pokrovsk municipality on Aug. 19.

According to Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, Russian troops are attempting to capture the Kostiantynivka-Pokrovsk highway.

Analysts noted an extremely difficult situation in the town of New York, though the Ukrainian Defense Forces still controlled the area as of Aug. 21.

ISW indicated in its Aug. 22 update that new geolocated footage suggests Russian forces recently captured Ptyche (southeast of Pokrovsk) and advanced further south.

According to analysts, the Russian army likely intended to advance west from the Karlivske Reservoir—from Yasnobrodivka and Karlivka—to encircle parts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces east of the Hrodivka–Novohrodivka–Selydove line. However, they did not achieve such success simultaneously with their advance south of Highway T-0511.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Aug. 27 that Russian forces continue to pressure in the Pokrovsk sector and are likely attempting to replicate their capture of Bakhmut. He suggested that Russian forces could suffer losses of 50,000 to 60,000 soldiers there.
