Russian Shahed drone crashes in Latvia, Army Commander says
Latvian Armed Forces Commander Leonīds Kalniņš reported that
a Russian Shahed drone, equipped with explosives, crashed in the Baltic country
on Sept. 7.
Latvian news outlet LSM
reported that Kalniņš stated the drone was not specifically targeted at Latvia,
based on an analysis and monitoring of the situation. The military drone,
identified as a Shahed type, was destroyed on the ground after its crash.
Latvia’s armed forces are still investigating whether the drone landed on its
own or fell.
Russian drone incident in Latvia – Key details
During a Russian attack on Ukraine on Sept. 7, a Russian
military drone crashed in the Rezekne region in eastern Latvia. This is the
first instance since the full-scale invasion began where a Russian military
drone has breached Latvian airspace.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs emphasized
the importance of a collective response to incidents involving Russian drones,
noting that “the number of such incidents on NATO’s eastern flank is increasing.”
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba
Braže announced
that on Sept. 9, the ministry would summon a representative of the Russian
embassy and reminded that a similar incident involving a Russian drone recently
occurred in Romania.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
