Turkish authorities have detained a ship under Russian flag that was carrying Ukrainian grain from occupied Berdyansk, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukrainian Ambassador to Turkey Vasyl Bodnar said on July 3.

According to Bodnar, the fate of Zhibek Zholy cargo ship will be discussed with Ankara on July 4.

“The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has made the corresponding request, and we hope that the ship will be arrested, its cargo – confiscated, and that those responsible will be held accountable,” said Bodnar.

The Zhibek Zholy is the first ship that has attempted to make use of port facilities in occupied Berdyansk, said the ambassador.

“This is an attempt to establish a (trade) route from occupied (Ukrainian) ports,” he added.

Turkish authorities are looking into instances of ships sailing from Crimea under forged credentials. Ukraine also insists on forensic examination of suspected stolen Ukrainian grain, in order to halt its export abroad.
