Ukrainian drones attacked the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory of Crimea and the Russian capital Moscow in the early hours of Sept. 17, the Russian Ministry of Defense and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported on their Telegram channels.

The ministry said in a statement that Russian air defenses had shot down a Ukrainian airplane-type unmanned aerial vehicle over the Istra district of Moscow Oblast.

Russian media also reported that Moscow’s airports had been closed for some time due to the drone activity, leading to flight delays and cancelations.

As for Crimea, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, two Ukrainian drones were shot down off the west coast of the peninsula.

Sobyanin's channel, in turn, reports "a drone attack on Moscow in the Istra urban district." According to preliminary reports, there is no damage or wounded at the site of the crash.

Russia typically claims that it has shot down all attacking drones or disabled them with electronic warfare, but there is evidence that some drones do indeed reach their intended targets.

The targets struck include office buildings, military-industrial complex factories, security forces administration buildings, and most notably – the dome of the Senate Palace within the walls of Moscow’s Kremlin overnight on May 2-3.

Ukraine has also recently stepped up drone attacks on targets in Russia and the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine – in particular in Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, which Russia started to occupy in 2014.

During the night of Sept. 14, a Russian Triumf air defense system was destroyed near the Crimean city of Yevpatoriya. The attack was carried out by SBU drones and Ukrainian-made Neptune missiles, Ukrainian authorities said.

Before that, on Sept. 13, powerful explosions rocked occupied Sevastopol in the south west of the peninsula. The Russian occupation authorities claimed there had been an attack by missiles and maritime drones ("unmanned boats"). The Russian authorities said that a shipyard was struck, and that two ships that were allegedly "undergoing repairs" had been damaged.

Ukrainian intelligence said that the attack damaged a large landing ship, the Minsk, and a Kilo-class submarine, the Rostov-on-Don. The Ukrainian military said the vessels are beyond repair.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
