Sanctions force Russia to halt icebreaker construction
Russia’s state port authority Rosmorport has ended a contract with the Onega Shipyard to build two 95-meter icebreakers, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) said on Aug. 18.
The vessels, part of the new Icebreaker7 class that were to usher in a next generation of Russian icebreakers, were initially scheduled for delivery last year. The deadline was later pushed back to 2026, but the yard never began full-scale construction, the report added.
Western suppliers have refused to deliver critical components, leaving the shipyard without access to key parts that Russia cannot produce domestically. Onega’s problems are not isolated but reflect a broader “trend of decline” in Russia’s shipbuilding industry, according to the report.
The sector’s downturn is stark: the Khabarovsk Shipyard recently cut its workforce by 70 percent amid a shortage of orders.
“Kremlin officials may try to showcase power and grandeur, but the reality in Russia is one of technological decline, financial instability and the systematic scaling back of ambitious projects because of its war of aggression in Ukraine,” NSDC’s Center for Countering Disinformation said.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the United States held internal discussions on using Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers to support various liquefied natural gas projects in Alaska. That plan was among potential agreements President Donald Trump and dictator Vladimir Putin could have discussed at the Aug. 15 summit in Alaska.
