Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has exposed a Dnipro resident who used Telegram to disseminate information about the movements of mobile groups of Territorial Recruitment Centers in an attempt to obstruct mobilization, the agency reported on Jan. 15.
According to the SBU’s Third Directorate in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, the man systematically monitored the routes of mobile recruitment groups and the locations where conscripts were being issued draft notices. He then shared this information in specialized Telegram channels, urging users to avoid those areas.
Although the suspect operated under a pseudonym, SBU cyber specialists identified him and determined his location. During a search of his residence, law enforcement officers seized communication devices containing evidence of the alleged illegal activity.
The investigation also revealed that the man had evaded mobilization without legal grounds.
He has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 114-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers obstructing the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations during a special period. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence of five to eight years.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. The SBU said that they are taking additional measures to block the Telegram channels used to disseminate the information.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
