SBU detains two Russian agents plotting missile strike on Ukrainian airfields housing F-16s
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained an FSB intelligence group plotting a missile strike on airfields housing F-16s and targeting Ukrainian fighter jets and helicopters, according to its statement on Jan. 28.
Two possible Russian agents were detained near a military airfield in Ukraine while allegedly photographing an F-16 takeoff, according to reports.
The investigation revealed that the suspects, two 22- and 21-year-old residents of Kremenchuk, were recruited by a female FSB agent, whose identity has been confirmed by the SBU.
The agents were tasked with gathering the exact coordinates of Ukraine's main and reserve airfields and aviation infrastructure to enable future Russian missile and drone strikes. They were also instructed to document and report on the equipment located at each facility, including text and photos.
To carry out their mission, the agents planned to travel across five Ukrainian regions on shuttle buses, renting housing near each site to spy on and film targets for several days, the SBU reported.
The special services intercepted the agents early in their operation, documenting their failed attempts to visit several regions and detaining them while they were photographing F-16s.
SBU investigators have charged the agents with high treason under martial law, citing conspiracy and the commission of the crime as part of a group. They are being held without bail and face life imprisonment, with property confiscation.
