SBU drone strike was guided locally, expert says

The Sept. 4 drone
strike that hit the HQ of Ukraine’s SBU security service in Kyiv was likely
guided in real-time via a nearby radio relay, Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to
Ukraine’s president on technology, said shortly after the incident.
“In my personal opinion, the Shahed was controlled and guided online through a MESH radio relay with internet access that a Russian agent activated somewhere nearby — within 5 kilometers — for a short period during the attack,” Beskrestnov wrote in a Telegram post.
He said the relay would be about half the size of a typical backpack. Beskrestnov noted that no other drones were in the Ukrainian airspace at the time, meaning “control through a [relay] chain from Russia was impossible.”
A Russian drone attacked the SBU building on Volodymyrska Street in central Kyiv, near St. Sophia’s Cathedral. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the drone was directed straight at the office of SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad.
A restaurant operated by the Zavertaylo chain was also
destroyed in the area, and several people were injured.
