SBU exposes draft dodging corruption scheme
Ukraine’s SBU
security service and the National Police have exposed a vast scheme that
allowed draft-eligible Ukrainian men to leave the country in exchange for bribes,
SBU’s press service reported via Telegram on Aug. 28.
According to the report, more than ten officials of the military medical commission and doctors were detained.
The organizer of the scheme offered eligible citizens to escape abroad with the help of forged documents attesting to their mobilization exemption on health grounds.
He charged each individual $3,000–$10,000, depending on the diagnosis and the period of its issuance. In total, law enforcement officers established more than 200 such criminal offenses.
When the suspect received an "order," he turned to his accomplices from the local military medical commission, who were responsible for falsifying health examination reports.
This way, the corrupt officials created a formal basis for striking conscripts from the military register, after which the dodgers could go abroad.
During the searches, law enforcement found money obtained through corruption, documents, and computer equipment with evidence of illegal activities.
The offenders face up to ten years in prison with confiscation of property.
