Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a financing program prepared by his government
to provide Ukraine with weapons worth EUR 17 billion ($19.1 billion) by 2027, German
broadcaster DW reported on July 14.
At a press conference in Berlin, Scholz stated that Ukraine's defense capability needs bolstering as the country's economy is incapable of shouldering such a significant burden alone.
"We must concentrate on the current scenario, that is, mobilizing all necessary forces to continue supporting Ukraine for as long as required," the chancellor said.
Scholz shared his views on the G7's security assurances for Ukraine, highlighting two crucial components – a commitment to enduring military support to Kyiv with all necessary weaponry during and post-war, and intelligence sharing among nations "if a threatening situation emerges after the war."
The chancellor also announced his government's plans to elevate Bundeswehr funding to 2% of GDP in light of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Scholz expressed confidence that this funding benchmark for the military would be achieved as early as 2024.
Scholz's comments followed a recently published report from the German government, which stated that Ukraine received EUR 2 billion in aid in 2022. The report projected aid of approximately EUR 5.4 billion for 2023, and from 2024 to 2027, the German federal government plans to allocate an additional EUR 10.5 billion.
Germany continues to provide military equipment and weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Following the NATO summit in Vilnius, Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed on a new package of German military assistance.
On July 13, Germany announced transferring additional Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft systems and components for the IRIS-T air defense system to Ukraine.
