Moscow on drone lockdown: Flights halted, signals jammed
A new drone attack grounded flights at Moscow’s Domodedovo International Airport again, as well as at the nearby Zhukovsky airport, according to reports by Russian Telegram channels on May 22.
Dozens of flights have been delayed, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at Moscow's other airports, Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo, on the second consecutive day of drone attacks targeting the Russian capital and its suburbs.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed that five drones approaching the city were shot down in the morning and another 30 the previous day.
In Russia’s Oryol Oblast, authorities restricted internet and mobile services to disrupt the drones' navigation systems. According to regional Governor Andrey Klychkov, more than 20 drones were allegedly “destroyed” over the oblast overnight.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that between midnight and 5:30 a.m. Moscow time on May 22, its air defense systems allegedly shot down 105 Ukrainian drones across multiple oblasts of western Russia.
Operations at Moscow airports were repeatedly suspended and resumed throughout the evening of May 21.
