Serial arsonist detained in Kharkiv
Ukraine’s SBU security service and National Police have arrested a 22-year-old Ukrainian deserter in Kharkiv who set fire to multiple vehicles in use by the military, SBU reported on Aug. 15.
The suspect had previously abandoned his military unit and was in hiding in Kharkiv. According to the report, he served in the Ukrainian military under contract, as opposed to having been conscripted or mobilized.
The SBU alleged that a representative of Russian intelligence approached the man through Telegram channels where he was seeking "easy money" and offered him collaboration. The young man set fire to six Ukrainian military SUVs in one night, the message said.
Previously, the SBU reported the arrest of two residents of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, ages 15 and 18. They were accused of burning three vehicles used by active-duty service members. The two suspects are currently in custody and face up to 10 years in prison. Authorities are considering whether to press charges against the minor.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
