Slovakia deports Ukrainian over alleged coup plot
Slovakia has deported a 59-year-old Ukrainian citizen allegedly due to his connections with Ukrainian intelligence services, Slovak news outlet Dennik N reported on Feb. 18.
Authorities have not disclosed what he is specifically accused of, nor have they provided any evidence, according to the report.
Police stated the decision to deport the man was based on “operational information” and an investigation that revealed "specific grounds and conclusions indicating the man's involvement in organized crime and his links to organized crime in Ukraine and its intelligence services."
According to Dennik N, the individual has been banned from entering Slovakia and EU’s Schengen area for two years. The police noted that the Ukrainian did not appeal the decision.
The Slovak police initiated deportation proceedings against the Ukrainian citizen on Jan. 30, citing an alleged "threat of a coup."
On Feb. 3, the man applied for asylum, which temporarily halted the deportation process.
On Jan. 25, Slovak PM Robert Fico criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's support of protests in Slovakia, calling it "interference in internal affairs." He also claimed that “one-third” of those protesting across Slovakia on Jan. 24 were Ukrainians.
