Coalition prepared plans for troop deployment in Ukraine if needed — Starmer

A “coalition of the willing” has drawn up plans to
strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities, including the potential deployment
of foreign troops on Ukrainian territory if necessary, British Prime Minister
Keir Starmer said, as quoted by APA
on Dec. 16.
“We’ve had a political process involving national leaders,
and a military process involving defense planners. We’ve said we want to
develop military plans to ensure security in the air, at sea, and on land, as
well as to boost Ukraine’s capabilities,” he said.
Starmer noted that the coalition now has military plans in
place for each of those domains.
The British prime minister clarified that the plans provide
for the deployment of military personnel in Ukraine, if needed.
“But at this moment, the priority is whether we can achieve
a just and lasting peace,” he stressed.
On Sept. 4, a meeting of the coalition of the willing was
held in Paris with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in attendance. The
participants discussed possible future security guarantees for Ukraine aimed at
ensuring a fair and durable peace.
The 26 member states of the coalition officially agreed to form
a support force that could be deployed in Ukraine as soon as a ceasefire is
reached — whether in the form of a truce or a peace agreement.
According to The
Wall Street Journal, the troop deployment plan, developed by European
military command, envisions the creation of two separate ground-based units.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has threatened that Russia
would consider any foreign troops on Ukrainian soil as “legitimate targets.”
