Hungary about to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership
The Fidesz party led by Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán has proposed the parliament to vote on ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership application on Feb. 26, leader of the faction Máté Kocsis announced on Facebook on Feb. 20.
The political force said it was ready to support this step.
Máté attached a photo of the relevant document with the caption “Sweden will join NATO.”
Hungary is still the only NATO country that has not ratified Sweden’s application for membership in the Alliance.
On Jan. 23, the Turkish Parliament approved Sweden’s accession to NATO. Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán said that his government also supports this decision and called on the parliament to vote for the ratification of Sweden’s application as soon as possible.
However, Hungarian Parliament Speaker László Kövér said that his country would not rush to ratify Sweden’s application for NATO membership because it “does not feel the urgency.”
On Feb. 5, the Hungarian parliament failed to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership application. MPs from the ruling Fidesz party boycotted the session.
