Sweden boosts aid to Ukraine and global programs amid U.S. exodus
Stockholm will allocate an additional SEK 1.67 billion (more than $175 million) to support Ukraine and fund humanitarian programs around the world, the Swedish government announced on July 1.
According to the country’s International Aid and Foreign Trade Minister, Benjamin Dousa, the situation in the world remains extremely tense, and reduced international funding from the United States only exacerbates the crisis.
"That is why Sweden has decided to come up with a comprehensive review of the aid budget priorities for 2025. We are allocating SEK 1.67 billion to support Ukraine and save lives worldwide. Sweden cannot compensate for the reduction in U.S. aid, but we must do everything in our power to support Ukraine and save lives," he said, calling support for Ukraine “existential for Europe.”
"Ukraine is Sweden's top priority in humanitarian aid and foreign policy. To resist Russia, which does not hesitate to shell playgrounds, hospitals, schools, and homes, support must be increased. Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom, but also for Europe's."
