Georgia’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the European
Commission’s latest enlargement report as politically motivated, claiming it
contained “unfounded negative assessments” and was used to fuel speculation.
“The steps and statements made by EU institutions regarding
Georgia — aimed at influencing the country’s internal politics — run counter to
the spirit of Georgia–EU relations and our shared interests,” the ministry said
in a statement cited by Echo
of the Caucasus. “This is alarming.”
Tbilisi accused Brussels of trying to use Georgia’s EU
membership bid as a “political tool” that damages relations between the two
sides. The ministry insisted that Georgia “remains committed” to agreements
signed with the EU and “continues to faithfully fulfill its obligations” under
the Association Agreement.
The remarks followed the Nov. 4 publication of the European
Commission’s 2025 enlargement report, which painted a grim picture of Georgia’s
democratic backsliding. According to the document, the country has seen a sharp
erosion of the rule of law and serious restrictions on basic civil rights. It
also accused Georgian institutions tasked with upholding the rule of law of
serving partisan interests.
Earlier, the pro-Russian ruling Georgian Dream party
declared victory in local elections — a move that sparked mass protests in
Tbilisi.
On Oct. 4, the day of the vote, dozens of demonstrators stormed the presidential residence in the capital. Riot police and patrol officers responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd.
