Trump’s policies will harm the very people supporting it, historian says
While globalization has harmed a vast group of people, U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff-driven policies will inflict even greater damage on those same communities, potentially deepening their economic woes, Ukrainian historian and professor at Ukrainian Catholic University Yaroslav Hrytsak said in an interview with Radio NV on April 11.
"We have this anti-systemic revolt of a huge group of people who are really suffering huge losses, huge damage due to globalization," Hrytsak said on Radio NV.
“Only Trump offers a cure that is even worse than the disease. This is the biggest problem.”
Trump's policies "will affect everyone," he stated.
"To what extent it will lead to a change, to the sobering up of this losing side, we do not know yet," the historian added.
Trump's imposition of tariffs
On April 2, the Trump administration officially imposed "reciprocal" tariffs affecting about 185 countries.
The minimum tariff was 10% (including for Ukraine).
For China, the new tariff was 34%, but taking into account the 20% duties imposed in March against China for its alleged role in the supply of fentanyl to America, the total duties for China amounted to 54%.
In response, China imposed a 34% duty on all goods from the United States on April 4 and also announced that it would impose export controls on seven types of rare earth metals used in the creation of high-tech products, such as computer chips. In particular, these are gadolinium and yttrium.
Trump called it a "mistake" and imposed additional tariffs against China in the amount of 104% on April 9.
China did not stay in debt and on April 9 raised tariffs for the United States to 84%.
For his part, Donald Trump once again raised duties for China – up to 125% ("for lack of respect to the world’s markets") and at the same time gave permission for a 90-day pause on the introduction of new duties for other countries.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
