The Ukrainian army repelled a reinforced Russian mechanized assault on the Kurakhove front and regained some positions in Toretsk, while Russia continues to advance near the captured city of Vuhledar, the Institute for the Study of War reported.

In the Kurakhove sector, Russian forces recently conducted a reinforced mechanized assault as part of their ongoing offensive operations in the area, according to a report by the U.S.-based institute on Oct. 14. Geolocated footage published on Oct. 13 indicates that Ukrainian forces recently repelled a Russian mechanized assault involving a force slightly less than a mechanized battalion. The Russians attempted to storm Ukrainian positions using up to 25 armored vehicles and five tanks. Ukrainian forces reportedly destroyed seven armored vehicles and one tank.

Russian “milbloggers” continued to claim on Oct. 14 that Russian forces had allegedly captured the settlement of Ostrivske (east of Kurakhove), but ISW has not yet confirmed that Russian forces have indeed taken control of the entire settlement.

The aggressor also has new confirmed advances near Vuhledar, continuing their offensive in the area after capturing the city. Geolocated footage published on Oct. 12 indicates that Russian forces recently advanced northwest of Vodyane (northeast of Vuhledar). On Oct. 14, Russian war correspondents stated that Russian forces had advanced northwest of Vodyane and northwest of Vuhledar, although ISW has not yet found confirmation of these claims. Russian forces continue offensive operations near Vuhledar in the areas of Kostiantynivka, Antonivka, Katerynivka, and Vodyane; northwest of Vuhledar towards Bohoyavlenka; and west of Vuhledar near Zolota Nyva.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces recently regained some lost positions in the center of Toretsk amid continued Russian advances on the city. Geolocated footage published on Oct. 13 shows units of the Russian 132nd Motorized Rifle Brigade shelling Ukrainian forces in the center of Toretsk. ISW believes this indicates that Ukrainian forces have recently regained positions in this area.

One of the “milbloggers” claimed on Oct. 14 that Russian forces had advanced in the southern part of Shcherbynivka (west of Toretsk), but ISW has not found confirmation of this claim.
