A prisoner exchange and the return of Ukrainian children illegally taken to Russia should come before any ceasefire with Russia, as proof of its genuine peace aims, the Ukrainian President’s Office said after a security summit in London on March 2.

“The ceasefire must begin with the exchange of prisoners and the return of children,” the statement reads.

“This would be a step to demonstrate Russia’s genuine intent for peace.”

The office stressed that reliable security guarantees are essential for any potential truce.

“In particular, the possibility of leveraging the mechanisms of the North Atlantic Treaty as one of the security guarantees and strengthening the Ukrainian army is being considered,” it noted.

European leaders at the summit discussed the United States’ vital role in providing enough support and effort to end the war. Work on a concrete plan will build on French and British proposals.

“The next meeting of European leaders will take place in the near future, where a new enhanced defense plan for Europe will be presented,” the President’s Office said.
