U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Attorney General Pam
Bondi, he said
on his Truth Social platform on April 2.
Trump wrote that Bondi is moving to "a much needed and important new job" in the private sector, which will be announced soon. He also credited Bondi for bringing down crime rates across the country, even though they have been declining since mid-90s.
On Bondi’s watch, the Justice Department closed over 23,000 cases related to white collar crime, terrorism, and other offenses.
“The bulk of these cases, which were closed without prosecution and known as declinations, had been referred to the DOJ by law enforcement agencies under prior administrations that believed a federal crime may have been committed,” ProPublica wrote.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will serve as acting attorney general, the White House said.
CNN reported that Bondi faced difficulties with satisfying Trump’s demand for a “revenge campaign” of prosecutions aimed at the president’s political enemies. The DOJ nevertheless secured indictments against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James; those charges were later dismissed after a judge ruled prosecutors had acted outside the law.
