The upcoming meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump could hasten the end of the Russo–Ukrainian war, Zelenskyy said on Oct. 15.

The president made the remarks during his evening address, two days before his planned trip to Washington on Oct. 17.

“We’ve already done our homework for the meeting with President Trump—both the military and economic parts,” said Zelenskyy.

“All the details are in place, and our agenda is substantive. I thank everyone who has helped. This really could bring the war to its end—only the United States has that kind of global influence, and we are doing everything to ensure others around the world stand with us.”

Zelenskyy also spoke about his meeting with senior Ukrainian officials and military commanders earlier the same day.

“Several topics [were covered]: our deep-strike capabilities,” he said.

“That capability directly affects Russia’s war potential and significantly reduces it. Producers of our weapons were joined [at the meeting] by the military, security services, and intelligence agencies. Our main task now is to scale up our long-range strike capabilities, and having everyone at the table helps a great deal.”

Zelenskyy will travel to Washington on Oct. 17 for a meeting with Trump. The two leaders are expected to discuss future shipments of U.S. military equipment to Ukraine, as well as assistance in supporting the Ukrainian power grid battered by a renewed Russian bombing campaign.

The Financial Times reported that during the Oct. 17 meeting, the presidents will discuss ways to compel Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to come to the negotiating table, including by supplying Kyiv with Tomahawk cruise missiles. The FT noted that Washington may provide Ukraine with between 20 and 50 Tomahawks.
