G7 leaders fail to convince Trump on tougher Russia sanctions

In discussions at the summit in Canada on June 16, G7 leaders could not convince U.S. President Donald Trump to adopt harsher sanctions against Russia, Bloomberg reported on June 17.
At the summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Trump frustrated allies when he said existing sanctions “come at a high price for the United States,” a remark he reportedly repeated several times during the dinner.
The final statement from Canadian PM Mark Carney, who is chairing the summit, is expected to note that the G7 supports U.S. efforts to broker peace in the Russo–Ukrainian war. It will also point out that Ukraine has shown willingness to agree to a ceasefire while Russia has not and reiterate that Kyiv’s allies must continue exerting economic pressure on Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was scheduled to meet with Trump on the sidelines of the summit in Kananaskis, but the U.S. leader left abruptly on June 16, returning to Washington as he suggested the United States is weighing joining Israel’s war against Iran.
Bloomberg noted that European officials are increasingly skeptical about trusting Trump to keep his promises when it comes to Russia. They are working to buy time by maintaining dialogue with the U.S. president while strengthening security ties with like-minded nations and exploring ways to bolster Ukraine’s position amid declining U.S. support.
