Trump—Zelenskyy meeting over, broader talks with Europe begin
A bilateral meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has concluded, with the two presidents immediately going into an expanded meeting with several European leaders on Aug. 18.
Trump will now chair talks with Zelenskyy, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, UK PM Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
In comments before the broader meeting, European leaders thanked Trump for supposedly agreeing to involve the Untied States in ‘[NATO] Article 5-like’ post-war security guarantees for Ukraine.
Macron, Merz, and von der Leyen reiterated the need to press Moscow on agreeing to a ceasefire before a full peace settlement can be negotiated.
Trump added that he will call Russian dictator Vladimir Putin after the meeting and explain what kind of peace terms Ukraine and its European allies would find acceptable.
Trump, Zelenskyy, and everyone else expressed support for a trilateral Trump–Putin–Zelenskyy meeting to be convened in near future, which Trump suggested could produce a lasting settlement in the Russo–Ukrainian war.
Details on security guarantees Europe and the United States would be willing to provide Ukraine with are expected after the talks behind closed doors conclude later today.
