Two German MEPs plan to attend May 9 parade in Moscow
Two German members of the European Parliament representing the left-populist party Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) will attend the May 9 military parade in Moscow and then travel to Kyiv, German broadcaster DW reported on May 7.
In a comment to DPA news agency, the lawmakers—Michael von der Schulenburg and Ruth Firmenich—added they will travel to Moscow along with MEPs from Czechia, Cyprus, and Slovakia. They also claimed they coordinated a visit to Kyiv with the Ukrainian embassy.
Former Bundestag members Klaus Ernst and Sevim Dagdelen said they would visit Russia’s embassy in Berlin on May 9. The pair, who also represent the BSW, said the gesture is intended as a signal against what they called a “revisionist history” and “accusations of fascism” aimed at the current Russian regime.
On May 6, a Kremlin spokesman released a list of guests expected to attend the Moscow parade. According to it, 29 foreign leaders will be among those present.
On May 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv cannot guarantee the safety of foreign officials visiting Moscow for the parade. “Our position is very simple toward all countries who traveled or are traveling on May 9: we cannot assume any responsibility for what takes place on Russian territory,” Zelenskyy said.
