Two Ukrainian demining
specialists working for Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) organization were
killed in a Russian attack on Vysokopillia, Kherson Oblast, the NPA said
on June 24.
Kherson regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin confirmed the report, specifying that a 24-year-old deminer was killed on the sport and their 25-year-old colleague died later in hospital.
Four other deminers were wounded in the attack; one is in serious condition, authorities said.
“The attack took place in Kherson Oblast in southern Ukraine on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 12:50 local time on 24 June. Both those killed and those injured are Ukrainian nationals,” the NPA said in its statement.
“Following the attack, Norwegian People's Aid immediately suspended all ongoing demining operations in the country to protect its staff. The country program is working at full capacity on crisis response, as well as follow‑up and care for colleagues.”
NPA has worked in Ukraine since 2022 and is among the
largest humanitarian organizations operating there. Its work includes
humanitarian demining and disposal of explosive ordnance, civilian protection
and community preparedness, food security support, and programs to prevent and
respond to sexual- and gender-based violence. The organization’s Ukraine
mission employs about 475 staff.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
