Five men attempting to cross the border in Zakarpattya Oblast illegally were involved in a car crash while fleeing border guards, the State Border Guard Service reported on Facebook on Dec. 23.

The incident occurred when two locals tried to transport three men across the Tysa River, using a vehicle disguised as a cash-in-transit van and with the driver dressed in a police uniform.

At a border checkpoint, guards attempted to stop the van, but the driver did not comply with the order and performed a dangerous maneuver that endangered the life of a soldier. The vehicle then drove away at high speed. During the escape, the vehicle collided with a concrete pole, resulting in serious injuries to one of the passengers.

Inside the vehicle, authorities found life jackets and wetsuits. The organizers of the illegal activity were apprehended and charged. The investigation is ongoing.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
