A team of U.S. defense officials recently visited Ukraine and conducted on-site tests of Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicles, advancing the possibility of a Ukraine–U.S. drone industry partnership deal, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said on Dec. 19.

The ministry said representatives of the U.S. Navy and the Pentagon made two visits to Ukraine to inspect the naval drones and carry out formal trials. During the visits, the Americans reviewed the technical capabilities of several platforms currently in service and met with Ukrainian manufacturers.

The Ukrainian side, according to the statement, presented “solutions that have proven effective in special operations and combat conditions” to the United States.

“Ukraine offers the United States a strategic partnership [in this area],” the ministry added.

“Ukraine’s defense industry is shaping the global unmanned systems market and integrating into the global security architecture through its first-hand experience of modern warfare.”

On Nov. 13, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Bloomberg that Ukraine had begun producing interceptor drones in cooperation with the United States.
