U.S. expands sanctions against ICC

The United States has imposed sanctions on International
Criminal Court (ICC)
President Tomoko Akane and senior legal adviser Abdoulaye Seye, the U.S.
Treasury Department announced
on Aug. 18.
Akane and Seye were added to the Treasury’s Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List, which identifies people subject to U.S. sanctions.
On July 13, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump administration intended to “dismantle” the ICC and urged other countries to join the campaign. He accused the court of waging a war against the United States “not with bullets or missiles, but with the force of so‑called international law.”
The European Commission criticized the Trump
administration’s characterization of the ICC as a threat to U.S. sovereignty.
