U.S. lifts sanctions on Russian container ships

The U.S. Treasury lifted
sanctions on three Russian container ships, the department’s Office of
Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced on March
31.
OFAC removed restrictions on the container vessels Fesco
Moneron, Fesco Magadan, and Sv Nikolay. All three vessels sail under the
Russian flag, the Treasury said.
On Feb. 4, Bloomberg reported, citing European government officials, that the United States had prepared additional sanctions against Russia, though there were no signs they had been imposed.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington is considering tougher sanctions on Russia and that any further measures would depend on the progress of peace talks.
On Feb. 19, President Donald Trump formally extended sanctions on Russia for another year, continuing measures imposed by U.S. presidents in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
On March 21, the Treasury removed two Russian
nationals, Yuri and Lidiya Korzhaviny, from OFAC’s sanctions lists. The couple
had been added in May 2024 as part of a package targeting Russia’s
military-industrial base and sanction-evasion networks; OFAC said they were
included because of their work in Russia’s transportation sector.
