U.S. sends more ships and Marines to Middle East

The United States is sending three more warships and about
2,500 Marines to the Middle East as the Iran
war shows no signs of ending soon, The Associated Press reported
on March 20, citing unnamed U.S. officials.
One U.S. official confirmed that the USS Boxer and two other amphibious ships, carrying roughly 2,500 Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, are leaving their home port in San Diego for the Middle East. Two other officials confirmed the deployment but would not say where the ships are headed.
On March 13, The Wall Street Journal reported the Pentagon was deploying an expeditionary unit to the Persian Gulf, consisting of several warships and 5,000 Marines and sailors.
On March 19, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the
Netherlands, and Japan announced plans to help stabilize energy markets and
join efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Later that
day, a French sailor carelessly using a fitness tracking app inadvertently revealed
the position of a French aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean, apparently
sailing east.
