U.S. Senate to vote on aid package for Ukraine next week
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced plans to hold a vote on a substantial military aid package for Ukraine and Israel next week, Reuters reported.
Schumer revealed that the Senate is postponing its scheduled break, which started Friday, and will reconvene on Monday to provide negotiating parties with additional time to hammer out an agreement. Emphasizing the strategic importance of the initiative, Schumer highlighted that the global community is closely watching these events unfold.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson aligned with Senate Republicans in expressing a willingness to support the aid package but with a condition—calling for the inclusion of new measures for border control between the U.S. and Mexico.
Senator John Thune expressed optimism about potential progress, pointing out the White House's keen interest in the situation. He also issued a cautionary note, mentioning ongoing discussions between representatives from both parties regarding the framework of a new agreement.
Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican, underscored that despite some headway, the negotiating parties are still "far apart" in reaching a consensus.
