The United States has voted against an International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA)
resolution that condemned attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as a
threat to nuclear safety, Reuters reported
on March 5.
The U.S. representative told the IAEA board Washington supports the agency’s work but opposed putting forward what it called an “unnecessary resolution that does not help achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia” ahead of the vote.
The United States joined Russia, China, and Niger in voting against the measure. Four countries voted no, 20 voted yes, and 10 abstained.
Reuters said the language of this resolution was softer than previous similar documents. The draft said the board “reemphasizes that attacks targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure for the off-site power supply of nuclear power plants, including at the ZNPP (Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant), represent a direct threat to nuclear safety and security.”
In February, the United States abstained from a UN
General Assembly vote marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale
invasion of Ukraine. That resolution called for an immediate ceasefire and reiterated
respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
