UK and Germany to send 220,000 Gepard shells and UAV funds to Ukraine
The United Kingdom and Germany announced a joint defense initiative to supply Ukraine with 220,000 35mm shells for Gepard air-defense systems and funding for drones, according to the countries' defense ministers at the 29th Ramstein-format meeting on July 21.
“In the field of air defense, Boris [Pistorius] and I have agreed on a partnership to provide Ukraine with critically important missiles for air defense systems,” said U.K. Defense Secretary John Healy, announcing a new joint project with Germany.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that Berlin will finance the transfer of 220,000 rounds of ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft system to Ukraine.
In addition, both countries will jointly invest in the supply of long-range Ukrainian-made drones, which they said have already proven effective on the battlefield.
“They destroy Russian planes, drones and missiles on the ground before they can pose a threat to Ukraine, its cities or infrastructure,” Pistorius said.
He added that the first drones financed by Germany will be delivered to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the coming days.
Healy also announced that the United Kingdom has allocated £700 million (about $910 million) in 2025 for artillery ammunition, long-range missiles and air defense systems, including £150 million (about $195 million) in just the last two months. Since March, the U.K. has supplied Ukraine with nearly 50,000 drones.
Additionally, the U.K. will contribute another £40 million (about $52 million) as part of NATO’s military assistance package.
On July 21, Kyiv will host an online meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the Ramstein format, which newly appointed Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal is set to attend for the first time.
Fifty-two countries are participating in the meeting, including NATO and EU representatives, as well as other international allies. The group coordinates military aid, training and overall support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia.
Pistorius also said that the United States and Germany have agreed to transfer five Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. The delivery is expected “in the near future.”
