More than 1,000 VALLON metal detectors and 100 bomb de-arming kits have been handed over to Ukraine to help clear minefields and make safe reclaimed territory, civilian homes, and infrastructure, the UK Ministry of Defence press service said.
“Russia’s use of landmines and targeting of civilian infrastructure underline the shocking cruelty of Putin’s invasion. This latest package of UK support will help Ukraine safely clear land and buildings as it reclaims its rightful territory,” UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace commented on the new aid package to Ukraine.
The bomb de-arming kits are designed to defuse Russian unexploded bombs, ammunition, and improvised explosive devices.
The UK Ministry of Defence emphasized that the deliveries are the last in 2022, but ensured that the support would continue next year.
In total, the UK provided 2.3 billion pounds sterling ($2.8 billion) of military aid to Ukraine in 2022 – more than any other nation except the United States – and the government has committed to sustain the same level of funding in 2023.
Huge territories are mined as a result of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia and ongoing hostilities in Ukraine. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Emergency Service predict that it may take up to a decade for complete demining.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs specified that about 270,000 square kilometers must be demined in Ukraine, including temporarily occupied territories.
Demining operations are conducted on a daily basis.
