Deep-rooted corruption in Russian MoD, more arrests expected – British intel
Corruption has deeply rooted in the Russian Defense Ministry (MoD) and further arrests are likely, the British MoD wrote on X in its latest intelligence update on May 25 following the arrests of Russian Deputy of the General Staff Lieutenant General Vadim Shamarin and other senior military figures.
Shamarin, who was detained on May 23 on suspicion of accepting bribes on a particularly large scale, faces charges under Article 290 Part 6 of the Russian Criminal Code. This follows the recent arrests of other top Russian MoD officials also suspected of corruption, including Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov and Head of Personnel Yury Kuznetsov, which occurred after dismissal of Sergei Shoigu from his post as Defense Minister on May 12.
Shamarin has headed the MoD's Commuications Directorate since 2021. One of his predecessors, Colonel General Khalil Arslanov, was also prosecuted on corruption charges in 2020.
Earlier, on April 25, the British MoD wrote that the Ivanov had rocked the Russian MoD, marking the most significant scandal since the dismissal of former Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov on corruption charges in in November 2012.
