Ukraine Air Force addresses concerns regarding attack on Khmelnytskyi NPP
Ukraine is investigating claims that an overnight Russian drone attack on Oct. 25 deliberately targeted the Khmelnitskyi Nuclear Power Plant, Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat stated on national television.
The attack caused significant damage in the vicinity of the plant, Ihnat added, and emphasized the importance of safeguarding key infrastructure facilities. He stated mentioned that Ukraine’s military leadership regularly discusses measures to strengthen air defense.
He did not confirm whether or not the strike was intentional aimed at the nuclear facility, however, when asked to comment on an earlier statement given by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Yesterday, we released information about the destruction of 11 drones,” the spokesperson explained.
“If there can be damage as a result of air defense operations, you understand that everything that is shot down falls down. Therefore, understanding the exact target of the enemy can only be determined when there is a direct hit.”
Following the drone strike, authorities in Khmelnytskyi Oblast reported that debris from the drones fell onto a critical infrastructure facility in the Shepetivka district. This incident affected the nearby cities of Slavuta and Netishyn, where the Khmelnytskyi NPP is located. Multiple buildings in the vicinity sustained damage, and approximately 2,000 households were left without electricity.
According to the State Emergency Service, a total of 1,760 structures were damaged due to falling debris and the shockwave caused by the drone attack. These structures included residential buildings, educational institutions in Slavuta, the fire and rescue department, the police station, and more. At least 20 people were reported to have been injured in the attack.
