Ukraine and Romania begin formulating bilateral security guarantees in Davos
Ukraine has started talks with Romania to create an agreement on bilateral security guarantees, during the Peace Formula meeting in Davos, Switzerland, the President’s Office said in a press release on Jan. 14.
Presidential chief-of-staff Andriy Yermak, as well as Julian Fota, state secretary of the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry, participated in the discussions. Romania is the ninth country engaging in security bilateral talks with Ukraine, the statement said.
The meeting focused on outlining key elements of the prospective agreement, and both parties agreed to continue negotiations.
“Without Romania, it is impossible to imagine full-fledged security guarantees in Europe, including in the Black Sea region,” Ihor Zhovkva, deputy presidential chief-of-staff, said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented a 10-point peace formula In November 2022 at the G20 summit, which included the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops, the release of all detainees, a tribunal for those responsible for aggression, and security guarantees for Ukraine.
The fourth Ukrainian Peace Formula meeting at the national security advisor level kicked off in Davos on Jan. 14, featuring representatives from 81 countries and international organizations.
Previous peace formula meetings were held in Malta, Copenhagen, and Jeddah.
The first country Ukraine began talks for bilateral agreements was the United States, followed by discussions with the last G7 country, Italy, in November. In December, security consultations commenced with the European Union.
