Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said work had begun on developing a Ukrainian satellite system, RBC-Ukraine reported on Oct. 4, citing his remarks to journalists.

Zelenskyy said the system would be “similar to Starlink.” He did not disclose any details about the project.

He also said it would be fair to allow Ukraine to use Starlink satellite internet for strikes on Russian territory.

“Why would that be fair? Because we know that some countries will share the relevant technologies with Russia at the end of this year or the beginning of next year,” Zelenskyy said.

In an interview with the Financial Times on Oct. 3, Zelenskyy said Russia had accelerated work on its own satellite network with support from China. He said he had repeatedly urged U.S. President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Russian and Chinese companies involved in developing Russia’s Rassvet network.

On Sept. 27, Ukraine’s presidential chief of staff Kyrylo Budanov said in an interview with NewsForce that Ukraine needs expanded access to Starlink satellite communications capabilities to effectively counter Russian missile systems.
