The Ukrainian military is devising a system of concealed and dispersed deployment of F-16 jets, designed to protect them from Russian missile strikes, Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Ilya Yevlash told TV broadcasters on April 29.
He explained that the best way to secure modern Western warplanes from Russian attacks is to house and service them in underground facilities. This kind of infrastructure, however, is costly and time-consuming to construct.
As a temporary alternative, a dispersed deployment plan for the fighter jets is being developed
"This will involve dispersed use across various types of runways and airfields; it will be difficult for the enemy to locate them," said Yevlash.
In August 2023, the Netherlands and Denmark pledged to transfer a combined total of 61 U.S.-made F-16 jets to Ukraine, following approval from Washington. Norway and Belgium later joined the initiative.
In December 2023, the Netherlands announced its decision to start preparing the transfer of the first 18 aircraft to Ukraine, later increasing this number to 24. Overall, the country promised to deliver 42 aircraft.
The first handful of F-16s is expected to arrive in Ukraine in June.
