Ukraine downs 10 Russian Shahed suicide drones overnight
Russian forces attacked Ukraine with 13 Shahed-136/131 drones and four S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles used in ground attack mode during the night of June 29-30, the Ukrainian Air Force reported on Telegram.
Ukrainian defense forced successfully intercepted 10 of the UAVs. They were launched from the east coast of the Sea of Azov.
The Russians attacked military and infrastructure facilities in Zaporizhzhya Oblast. Early reports indicate that there were no casualties.
The Shahed-136 is an Iranian-made kamikaze drone that was first introduced in 2020. In mid-July 2022, a Russian delegation traveled to Iran where Iranian colleagues presented these unmanned aerial vehicles.
In September 2022, a Shahed-136 was shot down for the first time in Ukrainian airspace near the town of Kupyansk in Kharkiv Oblast.
In October 2022, the Russian military launched the largest number of UAVs of this type into Ukrainian airspace, with 238 drones participating in the attack. Over 19 days in May 2023 - 154 drones were launched, and in January 2023 - 108. The maximum number of downed Shaheds in one day was 45.
As of May 20, 2023, a total of 885 Shahed UAVs had been intercepted over Ukraine.
