Ukraine’s Foreign Minister has developed a detailed position on the illegitimacy of Russia's permanent seat at the UN Security Council and the organization in general, and the need for Moscow to be excluded from the body, the ministry’s press secretary Oleh Nikolenko said in a Facebook post on Feb. 9.
He recalled that in 1991, the Russian delegation usurped the Soviet Union’s seat at the UN Security Council without statutory grounds. Therefore, Russian acquisition of the status of a permanent member of the UN Security Council was illegal.
“By grossly violating the UN Charter, the Russian Federation felt total permissiveness and impunity,” said Nikolenko.
“The unpunished evil of the past has led to bloody consequences in the present.”
He also thanked Ukrainian MPs for their interest in this topic and added that the ministry is working to exclude Russia from the UN.
On Dec. 23, European Council President Charles Michel called on Russia to be suspended as a UN Security Council member.
“I think there are flaws in international law if a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and this is the case with Russia, blatantly violates international law,” said Michel.
