Ukrainian border guards start using Oberih register to detect document forgery
Since mid-February, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has been using the Oberih register to detect forgeries in documents of those liable for military service crossing the border, the Ministry of Defense press service reported on March 5.
According to the Ministry, this has helped border guards stop 230 attempts to illegally cross the border using forged documents over the past three weeks.
The Ministry of Defense also stated that, previously, in order to confirm the validity of documents for traveling abroad, border guards had to contact a different bureau. Now, this information "can be checked online through the Oberih register in just a few clicks."
In September 2023, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that he wanted to establish electronic military registration in Ukraine, as well as digitalize military registration and enlistment offices, as well as launch an electronic military ID card. The digitalization of the military registration and enlistment office began in the spring of 2023, and, according to the latest data, it is already being used in some regions, including the frontline.
The Law of Ukraine on the Unified State Register of Conscripts, Persons Liable for Military Service and Reservists, called "Oberih," was approved in 2017, but the system is still not working at full capacity. The registry was formally launched on March 28, 2022.
