A Russian offensive to enter Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya Oblast failed, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Facebook on May 20. Russian forces attacked across the administrative border from Donetsk Oblast, aiming to take the village of Novodarivka, but took losses and were forced to retreat back into occupied Donetsk.
The Russians are reported to have used jet and tube artillery, as well as mortars, to strike infrastructure and civilian households, and delivered counter-battery attacks in the direction of Novopavlivsk and Zaporizhzhya.
Further south, Russian troops did not engage in active hostilities on the Pivdennyi Buh River axis, but fired at residential structures with mortars and artillery. They fired on houses with mortars and artillery. Engineering work on Russian positions continues, and they continue to fortify a second line of defense.
"There is a high probability of ongoing hostilities to improve the tactical situation and reach the administrative border of Kherson Oblast," the General Staff added.
