Ukraine plans to build 21 alternative bridge crossings, including across the Dnipro River, to maintain transport links amid Russian attacks, with construction already underway in Kyiv, Infrastructure Minister Mykola Kalashnyk said on Oct. 30.

According to him, the decision was prompted by Russian strikes on transport infrastructure and bridges in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Kharkiv.

"The government-approved project will ensure the rapid construction of alternative river crossings, including across the Dnipro River. A total of 21 bridge crossings are planned. Work has already begun in Kyiv, and the first bridges are expected to open early next year. The central government has also taken responsibility for all this work," Kalashnyk said.

On Oct. 27, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said city authorities planned to allocate 1 billion hryvnias ($24 million) to build combined river crossings over the Dnipro River and access roads, with the military command determining their locations. At a meeting of the Kyiv Defense Council, officials also discussed additional measures to protect bridges from Russian attacks, including developing technical solutions to preserve their structures.

Russia attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles on the evening of Oct. 26 and overnight into Oct. 27, including a strike on the city's Pivdennyi Bridge. Traffic on the bridge was restricted for several days, but on Oct. 30, the Kyiv City State Administration announced that vehicle traffic had resumed from the left bank to the right bank.
