On April 18, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russia had begun a fresh offensive against Ukrainian positions in the Donbas. Russian forces are attempting to encircle Ukrainian positions in the Joint Forces Operations zone, pushing south from Izyum while attempting to occupy the entirety of the Donbas port city of Mariupol.

The Joint Forces Operations zone is the area in Ukraine where Ukrainian forces have for eight years been fighting Russian proxy forces that seized control of parts of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
