Just a few hundred Wagner mercenaries remain in Belarus, down from over 6,000 in Summer 2023

The number of Wagner mercenaries in Belarus has decreased from about 6,000 to less than a thousand as of Sept. 24, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service spokesman Andriy Demchenko said on national television.

When the mercenaries first arrived in Belarus, their number was about 6,000. They didn't stay long, which is to Ukraine's advantage.

"Everything that happens on the other side of the border, both in Belarus and in Russia, is closely monitored by the [Ukrainian] intelligence services."

Wagner’s presence in Belarus started to wind down following a plane crash in Russia on Aug. 23 that killed Wagner Group head Yevgeny Prigozhin and his deputy Dmytro Utkin.
