ATACMS missiles for defense, not offense, amid growing support from international allies
Ukraine has no intention of using ATACMS missiles on Russian territory, said Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, in an interview with the Spanish publication ABC on Sept. 26.
Ukraine is in great need of ATACMS missiles, but Danilov stressed that they will be used exclusively for the defense of its own territory, in alignment with agreements with international partners.
Ukraine will continue to target Russian military facilities (on Russian territory), from which “almost daily attacks on our children” are carried out, but solely with domestically produced weapons. Unlike Rusia, attacks on the civilian population are out of the question, stressed Danilov.
“We are not attacking schools or kindergartens, as the Russian Federation does. If a strike is delivered there (on Russian territory), it will be exclusively against military targets,” Danilov emphasized.
During the meeting with Zelenskyy, Biden announced a new military aid package for Ukraine amounting to $325 million, which includes AIM-9M air defense missiles, Avenger air defense systems, ammunition for HIMARS MLRS, 155mm artillery shells, and more.
The United States decided to supply ATACMS missiles to Ukraine even before Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington but chose not to publicly announce it to avoid giving hints to the Russians, reported Britain’s The Financial Times.
