Ukrainian technology company Himera, in partnership with
Danish firm GomSpace, has successfully launched the Obria nano test satellite
into low Earth orbit. The satellite is intended to lay the foundation for an
independent Ukrainian communications system.
Himera and GomSpace, a Danish satellite developer, told
LIGA.net that the Obria nano satellite had been successfully launched and had
begun operations. It will serve as the first element of a future satellite
network for the Ukrainian military.
The satellite was launched Oct. 1, 2026, aboard a SpaceX
rocket as part of the commercial Transporter-18 mission. It is currently
undergoing technical testing and system calibration. Obria nano is under the
full control of a Ukrainian operator and is being used for national security
purposes.
Himera said having access to its own satellite resources is
a strategic priority for Ukraine. It would allow the country to diversify its
data-transmission channels, significantly improve the resilience of its digital
infrastructure and reduce its critical dependence on foreign private and
government operators.
In the long term, the developers plan to create a full-scale
satellite constellation capable of providing coverage across Ukraine and
interoperating with pan-European orbital systems.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
