Ukraine’s SBU security service has detained in Odesa a former fighter of the Sparta battalion, which is controlled by Russia puppet authorities in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast, the agency reported on March 6.

In 2015, the man joined the battalion and took part in fighting against Ukrainian forces in the Donbas. In particular, he shelled Ukrainian defensive positions, took part in fighting near Donetsk airport, was on duty at checkpoints, and underwent sniper training.

After being wounded, he left the battalion and secretly left for Ukrainian-controlled territory. Later, he returned to his permanent residence in Odesa.

The perpetrator was hiding from justice but continued to maintain contacts with his accomplices from the invading army.

The SBU agents found his whereabouts and detained him.

During searches at the terrorist’s place of residence, law enforcers found computer equipment, a mobile phone and SIM cards with evidence of his criminal activities.

He was served with charge papers under Part 1 of Art. 258−3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (participation in a terrorist group or terrorist organization) and taken into custody.

An investigation is underway.
